The Asusa Park

Asusa Park, prominently visible at the entrance to Isili, is home to the Nuraghe Asusa and features extensive green areas, an artificial pond, playgrounds for children, and jogging trails. Historically an experimental agricultural field, the park includes renovated buildings now occupied by local organizations and the Environmental Education Center. Its central location near the train station makes it an ideal venue for public events and cultural and sporting activities throughout the year.

Asusa Park is the gateway to the town, being the first sight a traveler arriving from Cagliari encounters when traveling along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the main street of the town.

The Casa Ghiani B&B is just a 5-minute walk from the park, which is also visible from the B&B’s windows.

The park is quite large and well-maintained.

Within its boundaries lies an important archaeological site, the Nuraghe Asusa, which gives the entire area its name. Archaeological excavations conducted in 2006 determined the nuraghe’s construction dates back to around 1300 BCE, and it is believed that its builders were the same people who constructed the Nuraghe Is Paras.

The section of the park closest to the Corso includes fountains, beautiful green lawns, a paved pathway arranged in an octagonal shape, a playground, and a vast olive grove. The archaeological area is located further away from the Corso, surrounded by a wooded zone atop a small hill where the nuraghe stands. The park also features internal paths and a well-equipped fitness trail popular among jogging enthusiasts.

In addition to the olive grove, the park contains several buildings. In the first half of the 20th century, the area served as an experimental agricultural field, where modern cultivation and farm management techniques were taught to local producers. The buildings have since been renovated and are now used by organizations such as Laore and GAL Sarcidano-Barbagia di Seulo. The park is conveniently located near the ARST-FdS railway station, situated across Corso Vittorio Emanuele. As part of its homage to Sardinia’s railway history, the municipality recently restored a vintage Koppel 301 steam locomotive and placed it within the park.

Asusa Park is equipped to host various events, thanks to its facilities and a large square built in front of the red-brick building. The area often serves as the venue for the San Giuseppe Calasanzio celebrations in August and the San Giovanni festivities in June. It also hosts award ceremonies for Carnival parades and other sports and cultural events throughout the year.
